When Hurricane Helene devastated my hometown in September 2024, our first act of survival was to build community. Yes, we were searching for clean water, food, safety and housing, but we did that with our hands and hearts open, seeking connection.
We widened the circle not simply to survive, but to heal and to thrive.
Strangers became resources, neighbors and friends. We didn’t turn people away because of any particular identity or affiliation because we were all seeking the same thing - belonging.
We wanted people to hear our stories, understand our grief, and share our concerns. It was a necessity for our healing and restoration.
Belonging is one of those words that evokes an indescribable feeling beyond its definition - one of those “you know it when you see it.” Except, if you’ve never experienced belonging, how do you know what you’re looking for?
